The first U.S. outpost of a Japanese restaurant chain, En Sushi proudly Americanizes traditional, Japanese fare. A good bet for a date or family dinner, all diners are made to feel welcome by the cheering sushi bar chefs and efficient waitstaff. Specialties combine Californian ingredients with Japanese flair, like a seared albacore salad, asparagus and bell pepper tempura, and roast duck with avocado and caviar. Whimsical twists appear on the standard martini menu, like the Sumo made with vodka and saké, garnished with ginger. We like the more traditional Japanese choices, things that can be hard to find at your typical L.A. sushi bar, including the tempura octopus, baked stone fish and the first-rate sashimi. The setting involves a long space filled with dark wood and flattering light. It is the kind of spot to help you forget the pressures of the outside world, if only for a little while.
