Pete's Cafe & Bar Description:
If you're wondering where the growing legions of downtown residents are eating, look no further than this sophisticated pub. In the heart of the historic Old Bank District, Pete's sidewalk patio brings new life to a once-dreary part of downtown. This endearing hangout is a venture of developer Tom Gilmore, the part-owner of Cicada who's building hundreds of lofts in the neighborhood, and hands-on Pete McLaughlin. The high-ceilinged space, with its old-fashioned black-and-white tile floor, long marble-and-mahogany bar and dramatic view of downtown, is a casual but cosmopolitan setting that suits its menu of American classics with a few interesting wrinkles. For basics, consider the Hellman burger (named for a neighboring building, not the mayonnaise), a half-pound of quality Angus beef topped with Fontina and smoked tomato aïoli, a three-cheese mac 'n' cheese scented with tarragon and some addictive fries bathed in blue cheese or splashed with chipotle sauce. Roasted chicken is jazzed up with a whole-grain mustard sauce and salmon with Meyer lemon butter. It's all very comforting, right through to the banana split or bread pudding with caramel sauce.
