La Parrilla Description:
When you order guacamole at La Parrilla, a cart is rolled to your table and the guacamole is prepared in front of you with great fanfare. First the avocado is cut and displayed like an Arnie Morton's steak. Then you choose your level of heat. This show might seem gimicky were the guacamole not so outstanding. La Parrilla's queso fundido (cheese on fire) is also memorable, especially when ordered with spicy chorizo. For a real treat, spoon the cheese into the warm, pleasantly chewy house-made tortillas. Yet as good as these starters are, they are only a prologue to La Parrilla's true specialty: flavorful grilled meats such as carne asada and tripe served on sizzling mortars or miniature barbecues. The mellow charro beans accented with chorizo, ham and grilled onions are heavenly. Weekdays at lunchtime, grab a seat on the pretty patio to watch the tortilleria at work. Rumor has it that the largest tree on the patio was imported from England by Charlie Chaplin, who once called this old building home.
