This spacious second-story Japanese restaurant is usually packed---especially at the boisterously fun sushi bar. In addition to a wide variety of sushi and sashimi, you can order tempura (shrimp, scallops and vegetables) and beef sukiyaki with enoki, udon, tofu and vegetables, along with more unusual dishes like seafood bouillabaisse with shrimp, sea bass, scallops, salmon, clams, green mussels and shiitake mushrooms in soy broth. Lobster dynamite---half a lobster stuffed with mushrooms, smelt eggs, scallions and mayo---is truly decadent. The service may be harried and the prices relatively high, but Asakuma still is a reliable bet for good Japanese food on the Westside.
