Apple Pan Description:
This legendary burger joint has been packing them in since 1947. The cooks-waiters at this tiny, always-crowded spot race around inside the horseshoe-shaped counter turning out orders fast. Those waiting for seats---there are no tables here, just stools at the counter---will stare ravenously at you, making sure you devour your food pronto. The classic "steakburger" is topped with iceberg lettuce, relish, mayo and Tillamook cheddar (don't ask for tomatoes---the request won't be granted). Our favorite, however, is the hickory burger, dunked in barbecue sauce. Often overlooked, but equally delicious, are the ham and cheese sandwiches, and the fries are perfectly crisp from the era before fast-food mass-production took the soul out of burger joints. The apple pie is nearly as legendary as the burgers, but we prefer the berry and cream versions.

Like most of the Apple Pan's customers, I have been going to the Apple Pan since I was a kid.
Try not to arrive during a lunch or dinner rush, order the Hickory Burger with cheese or the Steak Burger if you don't like sauce, the crunchy-perfect french fries and a piece of apple pie. I love the coke in those paper cups! hehe
I don't recommend the sandwiches, but get one if you don't eat red meat.
really good food, you won't be dissapointed

I just ate at the Apple Pan on Pico in Los Angeles tonight, and yes the burger and fries were very goodnot the bestbut very good, but they will NEVER see my George Washingtons again and here is why: A single patty basic hamburger, size no greater than the single at In & Out Burger or a single at Wendys or McDonalds that only comes with lettuce, pickles, mayo and their sauce costs $6.50! I added small fries to that for $2.20 and no drink, no cheese and nothing elsecame to an unreasonable $9.30 with tax, not including a tip for the gruff service.
After I left, I felt that I was really taken, or as my mother would say, they have some nerve! This Apple Pan hamburger and fries tastes just the same and not better than the one at In & Out Burger all over California and if you go therethe same exact single burger and fries would cost you less than $3.50! Now folks, please keep these other things in mind. Add a slice of cheese: $60 cents and a drink: $ 1.75 and you will walk out of there paying $12.00 for a thin fried burger, small fries and a drink. Still hungryorder their Apple Pie Slice: $5.00 a slice. Now, $5.00 is not bad for a nice sized slice with chucks of apples, but not the small 3-4 fork serving that they give you there. Now your bill is up to almost $18.00 with tax, and no tip. $20.00 for one person to have a complete hamburger meal at this place: As my mother would say again: They have some nerve! But folks--It gets worsethere are NO TOMATOES. (In & out on the 1.75 burger has a tomato or two.) I ask the waiter who says, use the sauce.
There are some places that have been around for a very long time that regularly attract the locals that grew up there and went there with dad and now they take their children, but whose value is now diminished or non-existent. Apple Pan is one of them. Go somewhere else unless you have a lot of money to burn or want to walk away hungrythere is nothing memorable about this place.

I cannot believe this place gets so much praise and respect!! I went there with a friend of mine fairly recently and we were amazed at how mediocre and overpriced the burgers were. The fries sucked as well. To top it off, they only accept cash. Yep, it's 2008 folks, and there are still fast food joints/restaurants only taking cash. The "Pan" in Apple Pan must be referring to pan handlers because those are the only people who would be happy eating at this dump. Of course, they would need to have a good amount of change in their cup to afford a burger here. STAY AWAY!!
