Melrose Place Café Description:
Despite its La Cienega address, this charming sleeper fronts on sophisticated Melrose Place, just across the street from Bastide restaurant and its partner, Assouline books. The café was opened by the owners of now-defunct Chocolat, previously on Melrose Avenue. The interior is little more than a ten-foot-wide sliver---just enough space for a chocolate-colored banquette, a handful of black leather-clad tables and some Boilauges prints. The entire façade opens up to the street in good weather, and tables spill onto the sidewalk. Breakfast is a major attraction here, when shoppers, struggling screenwriters and gossiping girlfriends linger over eggs Benedict, breakfast burritos and good espresso. Later in the day, items like a bresaola panino, Caesar salad with grilled shrimp, salmon teriyaki, and spinach and ricotta ravioli satisfy guests until closing at 5 p.m. For an unexpected treat, consider a chocolate or Grand Marnier soufflé, a former signature at Chocolat.
