Michael's on Naples Ristorante Description:
Along the romantic canals of the picturesque Naples neighborhood of Long Beach, you can ride in a gondola serenaded by real Italian gondoliers. Now, Naples also boasts an authentic Italian culinary experience to match in this elegant two-story ristorante. The downstairs is awash in whites and golds, sensuous Murano glass lamps, and crisp linens. Upstairs, a romantic candlelit terrace with a crackling fireplace hosts a well-heeled Long Beach crowd that knows how to enjoy wine and lively conversation. Owner Michael Dene warmly greets his guests tableside, while Massimo Aronne, the charming general manager, draws from his profound knowledge of Italian wines to suggest excellent pairings. The kitchen, now overseen by executive chef David Coleman, uses only organic, free-range, seasonal ingredients, and daily pastas are all made by hand. Dishes may include the tender, glistening beef tartare bruschetta, or the house-made burrata. Pleasing entrées include branzino, flown in daily from Italy, delicately sautéed in lemon and white wine, and rich osso buco nesting on a colorful bed of savory saffron risotto.

I have always thought Long Beach a Culinary Wasteland in the respect that we haven't had any outstanding restaurants with great food here. Now that has changed. About a year ago Michaels on Naples opened with great promise. The service was excellent as well as the wine program and stemware selection. The food was just ok back then. Their opening Chef left after severall Months and in came a young Chef Matt Poley. After working with Gino Angelini Matt seems to have developed his own style now including making his own sausages, pancetta, pasta and more. He sources whole wild boar & lamb and processes them completely in his kitchen to use in a variety of dishes. In addition it is great to know that Michaels on Naples is using the freshest in season produce from local farmers market. You can definately taste it in the dishes they create.
At dinner just last night we had three types of handmade raviolis...Chestnut, Pork Belly, and Mushroom. The first two raviolis were wonderful, the mushroom was out of this world good. Other dishes at the table were Organic Beef Short Rib and a series of tasty yet simple salads.
Michaels on Naples is worth the drive from L.A. or O.C. We have been driving to L.A. for years for good food and now for once we can stay local.
