J. Sheekey has, it seems, been around forever, defying the march of time and remaining one of London's favourite fish restaurants. Lunch is less frantic than dinner when, from the moment the doorman lets you in, you're swept into a theatrical hubbub where the rich, famous and celebrity clientele gather. Fish is flappingly fresh and treated with the simple respect it deserves: griddled tiger prawns with chilli and coriander dressing, steamed mussels with classic white wine and parsley, shellfish risotto, and Sheekey's fish pie are matched with far from ordinary vegetables. Of a traditional selection of puddings: summer pudding and that great favourite spotted dick with butter and golden syrup are typical. Not just the history but everything about Sheekey's is so polished it generates a satisfied glow. With next-door Oyster Bar, the place is more popular than ever.
