Belvedere Marco Pierre White Description:
The Belvedere's location is ideal---tucked peacefully in leafy Holland Park away from the roar of London traffic and in summer within earshot of the nearby open-air opera festival. The overall impression, the mirrors, floral wallpaper and greenery, is one of sophisticated intimacy. The cooking is classical with a modern take, formerly executed by Billy Reid who has now departed the kitchen. The menu ranges widely, offering the likes of classic ham hock terrine and eggs Benedict to shellfish bisque with Cognac and cream for starters, then a range of soup and salads before venturing into pastas---perhaps gnocchi with wild mushrooms or a crab risotto. Main courses go the traditional route, braised shoulder of lamb with couscous and greens in rosemary jus, or some first-rate fish such as sea bass with spinach, potato and scallop butter sauce. Finish with a rice pudding with homemade raspberry jam or the good cheese selection. The wine list is even-handed in its offerings and fair in its pricing, and the service is charming. Set 2-course menu £15.95, 3 courses £19.95. Set 3-course Sun. lunch £24.95.
