Salvador de la Torre started out as a dishwasher in a Mexican restaurant when he first came to the Kansas City area. Now, he's a successful restaurateur turning out simple, honest food from his native Michoacán, Mexico. Chips are served with cilantro-flecked salsa; horchatas are not too sweet, nor are they heavily-flavored with cinnamon. For an appetizer, try the fajita nachos garnished with both grilled beef strips and chicken breast or the fiery queso especial with fresh jalapeños, spinach, tomatoes and onions. Entrées range from a light, spicy chile relleno to rustic barbacoa and pork tacos tucked into corn tortillas. Light, fluffy tamales are stuffed with big bites of pork, and fish tacos---made with sautéed tilapia---are fresh and vibrant. Pollo del Rey, grilled and doused with 1800 tequila, is a fire-starter. Make your meal a fiesta with a potent Patron margarita, served in a jumbo-size margarita glass.
