Pamplemousse Le Restaurant Description:
This cozy 85-seat converted home features the charm of a French countryside inn, an impressive wine cellar just inside the entrance, small private dining nooks, subdued lighting and soft hues. Tables are set with pink cloths, burgundy napkins, flowers in burgundy glass vases and elegant white-on-white service plates. Waiters describe the preparation of the evening's fare. Hot crusty bread, hard-boiled eggs and individual crocks of the house vinaigrette accompany a handsome basket of lettuce and crudités. Try the jumbo shrimp appetizer with sauce diablo, or the escargot with Burgundy wine sauce, mushrooms and garlic. Specialties are rack of lamb with pistachios, grain-fed roast duckling and New York prime filet. Luscious desserts such as profiteroles, soufflés and coupe maison with fresh berries complete the romantic French dinner.

Review :
One's view of Pamplemousse may be based on expectations. If you expect Guy Savoy fare, you will be dissapointed. However, if you are looking for moderately priced, well prepared, French food, this is a good choice. The walls of the smallish dining room are decorated with a variety of celebrity photos from the Rat Pack era. Service is attentive and more casually friendly than at many restaurants. My server Keefer did an excellent job. Starting off my a basket of crudites was a nice choice, and I enjoyed the vinaigrette that accompanied it. I chose the Fetticine a la George followed by the duck breast and confit. Everything was delicious and I found portions larger than other French restaurants in the city. The only real negative is that Pamplemousse lacks the refinement and finish of places like Alex and Fleur de Lys. However, it is at least half as expensive as those restaurants. Readers should note that Pamplemousse is located in a fringe area of East Sahara. I would recommend driving or taking a taxi
