On a strip of gentrified Lake Avenue now replete with renovated Art-Deco architecture, galleries and funky shops, this quaint, lace-curtained restaurant has been pleasing customers for two decades. Everything---including the bread---is made on the premises. We like the French onion soup, its good broth full of soft onion rings beneath a crown of caramelized Gruyère cheese. L'Anjou's interpretation of beef Wellington smothers tenderloin in mushrooms, wraps it in flaky puff pastry, then accents it with an unusual black-pepper sauce. Food can be on the heavy side, with many dishes ballasted by rich sauces, so bring along a hefty appetite. While you're at it, indulge in a robust Bordeaux.
