El Chamol Description:
The décor might make this place look like just another Tex-Mex entry, but one glance at the menu---shrimp over cactus paddles? roasted poblano with lobster? chicken crêpes with Chardonnay mole sauce?---will assure you it has higher aspirations. Indeed the proprietor is a former Ritz-Carlton executive chef, and he and his family have brought together a venture in the western reaches of the county that's aching for greater exposure. Some of the items, such as beef tenderloin vol-au-vent with chipotle-Cabernet sauce, overreach a bit and could use an upgrade in quality. But there's no arguing with the Mexico City-style ambition of such dishes as pan-seared jumbo scallops on poblano risotto or giant ravioli stuffed with lobster and huitlacoche. Be forewarned, though---this is the suburbs. Babies and toddlers abound, even if the fajitas are marinated in tequila.
