Kusadas'
Overview
Connected to the mainland by a causeway, this tiny
island barely has room enough to hold a former fort (now a restaurant) and
an even smaller park. The mainland town of the same name is where most
activity is. Once a pleasant fishing village, it has become rather raucous
in recent years and doesn't hold much of interest. Many people stay there,
however, when visiting Ephesus (12 mi/19 km away) or Izmir.
Kusadasi is also the port where Aegean cruise liners tie up for
their day visits to Ephesus. Day trips can be made to nearby Didyma to see
the Temple of Apollo and to the Ionian port city of Priene to see its
theater, lower gymnasium and Bouleuterion (town hall). Another excursion can
be made to Miletus, an important ancient Greek town where a superb
Greco-Roman theater still stands. In the town of Kusadasi, the best places
to stay are near the Gulf of Kusadasi. 40 mi/65 km south of Izmir.
