Roy's Poipu Bar and Grill Description:
Pacific Rim cuisine blending European techniques with Asian flavors and ingredients of the Pacific. Extensive menu with frequent changes as new appetizer, salad, dinner and dessert creations occur. Full bar. Wine is also available by the glass.
Unfortunately, the decidedly mundane setting in an equally flat shopping center drag down what should be an uplifting dining experience, given the quality of the food and the almost hyper waitstaff. This place bustles because it is intent on being a fun restaurant with enough pow to tickle the taste buds, and that requires a lot of energy. The food is innovative and fresh, and blends Japanese, French, Chinese, Italian and Pan-Asian influences without losing the unique flavors and textures. It also manages to work in local-style elements like sashimi, grilled meats, and island fish and vegetables. By cobbling together several items you can make a stimulating, eclectic meal, and we've never been disappointed in the food. It's just that Roy's seems a bit citified for a country place like Kauai. Like the others in the chain, this one is loud and exuberant, with an overeager waitstaff that tends to flit and hover, adding to the general feeling of subdued frenzy. It comes off feeling aloof and superficial, and that's not fair to the food. But if you can put that aside, you'll be pleased with what's on your plate. The wine list is virtually a copy of Roy's Honolulu list and reasonably priced.
