A household name to native South Florida foodies, Louie's Backyard started the New World-cuisine ball rolling about 15 years ago when celebrity chef Norman Van Aken performed culinary magic in the kitchens here. Still an icon among upscale eateries and destination-point dining, Louie's has now opened its upstairs as a more casual, small-plate dining room (same topnotch ingredients, wine and service but highly affordable). The southernmost fine restaurant in the United States, this is a breezy, multileveled Key Wester (a wooden A-frame that's all porches, windows and water-views). Seafood creations and contemporary versions of American classics keep both the local in-crowd and the out-of-town crowd lining up, year after year. You may find Gulf shrimp and lobster ravioli in shrimp cream, ahi poke in Thai peanut sauce, or seared foie gras in mustard-plum vinaigrette. If meat is your request, beef short ribs braised in red wine with parsnip purée and chips will satisfy. The Afterdeck is the spot for Key West's elite and tourists in the know. Sit outside on the massive patio that hugs the Atlantic and receive a free massage from tropical breezes, imported from Cuba just a few score miles away. Make your reservation well in advance during the high season.
