Z's Oyster Bar & Steakhouse Description:
The seafood offerings in land-locked Louisville used to mean either a fried fish sandwich or maybe some broiled catfish. Now that Louisville is a UPS shipping hub, there can be Z's, a top-flight seafood restaurant as well as a steakhouse. The ocean-going selection is flown in fresh daily from as far away as the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. So start your dinner with a sampler from sweet to briny, of oysters from the West Coast and an icy martini with a twist. Or indulge in two or three of the huge shrimp, each about five inches long, surprisingly tender and flavorful. The fish selection changes depending on the fishing boats' catches, but the crab meat-stuffed trout, buttery Dover sole or the dramatically deconstructed whole lobster always is on offer. The house-aged steaks have been known to bring tears to meat-lovers' eyes. Order the filet medium rare. The rack of lamb is almost as good, with the bones separated from the hearts of the chops and served alongside. Garlicky sautéed spinach, asparagus seasoned with pecan butter and nutmeg-scented creamed corn are among the shareable sides. Jack Daniels-infused mashed sweet potatoes are wonderfully decadent. A notable wine list has selections appropriate to both meat and seafood selections of the menu. Nightly flights offer opportunities to discover new favorites. Choose a table in the main dining room, partitioned with fish tanks, or a cozy booth in the Art Deco bar, where Big Band jazz is usually piped through the sound system.
