New Orleans knows Italian cooking, and the Brick Oven Café is a good source for classic Italian American cooking, with much of the kitchen's soul evident in the lusty character of the sauces. This marinara is simple, flavorful and thoroughly satisfying. So are the versions of veal piccata, spaghetti carbonara and vegetarian minestrone. Pastas are definitive, in both taste and execution. Eggplant shows up frequently and to especially good effect in the appetizer eggplant rolatine. Booth seating is preferable to the uncomfortable iron patio chairs at the other tables. There are enough tins, jars, garlic braids and pictures scattered around to decorate another restaurant or two, but clutter is part of the charm. Located way outside of the city proper, the Brick Oven is just minutes from the New Orleans airport. The silvery Statue of Liberty rising through the suburban clutter outside lets you know you've found the right place.
