Hukilau Lanai Description:
A casual, airy setting, much like sitting out on a friend's lanai, makes this restaurant very pleasant and enjoyable. The ambience and service are both island-style, meaning it's relaxed, but that's a good thing. This is a place where you can just hang out and enjoy a nice leisurely meal of well-prepared original dishes created from mostly local ingredients. It's a lovely spot for a drink and appetizers, as the torch-lit lanai overlooks the ocean and easy-listening music is performed nightly. Pupus include shrimp bisque, Mongolian lamb baby-back ribs, and sweet potato ravioli. Salads are grilled ahi, Kilauea greens with goat cheese or Caesar, in full and half portions, and the Wally salad served with meals suits just fine. Entrées run the gamut from rib-eye steak through shiitake mushroom meatloaf made from local grass-fed beef to sugar cane shrimp and mango chicken grilled on a skewer. But fresh island fish paired with well-suited sauces is where the kitchen shines. You'll find opah, ahi, wahoo or whatever is good and right off the boats, literally. Or choose a mixed surf 'n' turf plate. Desserts are creative: don't miss the goat cheese crème brûlée or a cake made from Big Island chocolate and served warm.
