La Cena's opening---just a few blocks from The Landing and a few steps from City Hall---heralded the slow blossoming of Jacksonville's long-awaited downtown renaissance. It also gave a modicum of relief to sweet red sauce-weary lovers of classic Italian fare. In this 14-table eatery, patrons listen to Vivaldi while perusing a menu with more than 30 freshly-made pasta offerings, as well as Roman classics such as sage-scented veal saltimbocca or bucatini alla jerasamo with portobello mushrooms, radicchio and prosciutto. Trenette al rotella affumitico, with mellow smoked trout and artichokes, is simply extraordinary. Chef Jerry Moran is known as a perfectionist and he leaves no doubt that he is passionate about his food. Don't skip dessert. The profiterole, while not exactly exotic, is memorable.
