Oak-fired fresh ingredients attract foodies and power-lunchers alike to this laid-back bastion of Provençal cuisine. The smoked tomato soup with crème fraîche captures everything good about the Mediterranean terroir in a single spoonful. Regulars gravitate toward the simple, moist oak-grilled fish entrées and crusty gourmet pizzas. Then there's the house-made fettuccine with braised lamb, caramelized fennel, tomato, garlic confit and olives. And, there are few better ways to spend an early happy hour than sipping wine and noshing on homemade potato chips with melted blue cheese. Window walls lighten the dark wood-laden dining room and the display kitchen offers a pleasant visual distraction. Bistro Aix's desserts---like the flourless chocolate espresso torte or gooey profiteroles---can be ordered at the table or to-go from the back-of-the-restaurant bakery counter. Fair warning---during busy times, the eatery can get quite noisy. If you're not prepared to shout a little, don't try to have a conversation.
