An Indianapolis tradition, right in the newly renovated downtown area. They have the best (read hottest) shrimp cocktail that you will ever have.
A landmark steakhouse since 1902, this is the place to go for atmosphere as well as seared steaks and a jumbo shrimp cocktail with throat-singeing heat. If the walls could talk, they'd keep you spellbound with the list of dignitaries, famous and not-so-famous who have dined on tender filets, bone-in rib-eyes and the real crowd pleaser: strip steaks. While it's a steakhouse, the Indiana pork chops and Amish roasted chicken are favorites, too. Prices are steep, but entrées include a navy bean soup starter good enough to write home about and a choice of starch, which definitely should be the baked potato. There's no extra charge for the surly but professional servers, and you can even ask for a tour of the impressively stocked wine cellar; it includes selections to suit the most discriminate diners who frequent St. Elmo's---often. If you're into people-watching, stay alert; this is the place local and visiting politicians and top athletes frequent.
