Dreamland Palace Description:
How can you resist a place with a name like this? The building itself is a restored circa-1875 tavern and general store with later additions; it's impossible not to conjure up visions of big wedding receptions with Grandpa teaching little Suzy to polka. The meat of the menu, so to speak, is solid, home-style, traditional German food, including schnitzels, stuffed cabbage, sausages, pork hock, rouladen and the inevitable sauerbraten. The ubiquitous potato pancakes are sizable and just-crunchy-enough, but they illustrate the limitation of cooking from one's family recipes when a broader array of possibilities exists. Zippy red cabbage and other traditional side dishes help round things out. Skip the salad bar, which isn't notable, but do leave room for apple strudel. The local crowd tends to fades away early, so the Palace isn't open late.
