Berryhill Hot Tamales Description:
It's hard to believe that the jumping joint that is Berryhill's started with just one tamale cart. But more than 50 years ago, that's just what the first owner pushed around posh River Oaks. Today, several owners later, the name Berryhill's Hot Tamales is a misnomer. Sure, tamales are still on the menu and, yes, they're even spicy. But people who frequent Berryhill's don't just go for the tamales. They go for their fix of Houston's best fish tacos-a commonplace menu item now, thanks to Berryhill's introduction of the crispy fried catfish version discovered in Belize. The sweet, beer-battered fish is enclosed in two warm corn tortillas, spotted with a tasty rémoulade and stuffed with red cabbage and cilantro. Pull out most of the red cabbage for the best effect. A side of black beans gets you out for under $5, but most opt for a Baja platter of two tacos with rice and beans for a tad more. For weight-watchers, there's a grilled version of the fish as well as decent shrimp tacos but, honestly, these pale in comparison to the original. And, if some in your party refuse to even try a fish taco, the casual walk-up counter café features a full menu of Tex-Mex offerings, from enchiladas to quesadillas to the namesake tamales. A salsa bar features a variety of mild-to-hot sauces to enhance your meal and a full bar of libations offers another kind of enhancement altogether.
