59 Diner Description:
The retro design of this building by the Katy Freeway was too funky for the many restaurants that tried to make a go of it before 59 Diner took up residence. Today, it's viewed as an arched architectural wonder, befitting a blast from the past. The blue plate specials that keep hungry diners happy include the chicken-fried steak, served with mashed potatoes and Texas toast. Thin-sliced onion rings are a hit as a side to burgers, chili dogs and myriad sandwich selections. Besides a complete line of all-American shakes, malts and fountain drinks, 59 Diner scoops sundaes and banana splits. It also dishes up mean cobblers and a memorable banana pudding.
