Don't be too quick to dismiss the English as inept in the kitchen, especially if you haven't sampled the authentic pub fare of what locals call the Black Lab. It's one of the few places you'll find hearty shepherd's pie, bangers and mash and a jolly good bacon cheeseburger. Want even more authenticity? Try the Bubble and Squeak, a whimsical potato and cabbage dish named for the noises it makes while cooking. It's complimented with the British standard side dish, a broiled tomato, as well as what the Brits call wow-wow sauce. Of course, fish and chips, as well as other cod dishes like fishcakes and fish pie, are also staples. All the entrées are best washed down with a pint, though the cozy, lace-curtained décor is more reminiscent of a tea room than a pub. The better to bring the Mrs. so she won't complain that you spend all your time down at the pub. And, if anyone still doubts the worthiness of English food, sample instead a wide range of Americanized offerings, from chicken sandwiches to grilled salmon to pork chops. A dinner favorite is the Chicken Labrador, stuffed with cream cheese and Canadian bacon and topped with a red wine-mushroom sauce. Desserts can be a treat, too. Purists simply must try the Spotted Dick. An old-English tradition, dick is the name of a pudding; in this case, spotted with raisins and currants. Or Settle in for a Raspberry Trifle or Scottish Apple Pie. After dinner, climb the stairs for an evening of jazz at Cézanne, a live-music lounge that books outstanding local and national acts.
