Shokudo Japanese Restaurant Description:
Often unusual and occasionally bizarre dishes are offered at this ultra-modern restaurant and bar that brings a Western outlook to Japanese and other Asian fare. House-made tofu is a must-try as are the ishiyaki (hot stone cooking) selections like the sukiyaki bibimbap---a happy marriage of Korean-Japanese flavors. Grill-at-your-table meats and fish are a popular choice and Shokudo's version of chanko nabe, aka Sumo wrestler stew, is enough to feed two or three people. Be sure to check the saké offerings as they always have at least one or two that are unique. The drink is served in a traditional wooden saké box atop a drift of shimmering shave ice crystals; a tantalizing yet practical presentation. Don't miss the honey toast dessert---two thick slices of bread hollowed-out, cubed, tossed in butter and honey, then piled back into the crust along with ice cream---an oddly tasty treat. A most important tip: The images on the menu are deceiving; the portions are much larger than they appear---order accordingly.
