If you're having trouble deciding between Italian and Chinese, here's the answer. A bilingual pun, the name Ciao Mein reveals the twin cuisines served here. It's not an attempt at an East-West mixture, except in the sense that you can order focaccia and fried rice in the same meal. We love the fresh baked bread basket that comes before the meal, especially the cheesy breadsticks, which you can dip in either pesto or a garlicky Asian chili sauce. When we open the menu, we give the nod to the Chinese food---especially the fiery Szechuan eggplant and the honey walnut shrimp. But the Italian's not bad---try the solidly spiced penne campagnola with bell peppers and sausage. The much-heralded tiramisu here is too sweet for anyone who likes the authentic recipe. Far better for dessert is the Marco Polo, neapolitan spumoni, espresso ice cream with chocolate shavings, lychee sorbet and white chocolate-ginger ice cream. The wine list is actually quite extensive, with a good Italian representation, but we can never figure out what wine to order with the double cuisine here, so good luck.
