At The Landmark shopping mall, glamour extends beyond the fashions to the food that's just as stylish. Venture to floors four and five and find chef Joël Robuchon's outpost. Step in off the dim black catwalk onto Robuchon's trademark dark granite floor. Immediately, your attention is drawn to the contrasting red and black color splashes that dot the dining room. Bright red stains tall leather stools tucked into a sushi bar and draws your eye toward the open kitchen, where stacks of vibrant fresh bell peppers line the walls. Get settled, then call on the amiable sommelier who provides counsel, guiding you through a 1,200-bottle list where old vintages and affordable wines comingle. You might find the open kitchen a distraction, but your attention shifts to the food once it hits the table where all senses are directed to the freshest ingredients, cooked simply (and sometimes creatively) with finesse and precision. Fixtures on L'Atelier's tasting menu worldwide are the refreshing tomato "millefeuille" layered with crab meat, avocado and green apple; a deluxe beef and foie gras mini-burger with caramelized bell peppers; foie gras-stuffed free-range quail served with Robuchon's interpretation of mashed potatoes (equal parts butter to potato) embellished with generous shavings of summer truffles; and the remarkably tender pan-seared Kagoshima beef anointed with Parmesan and black truffles. End with one of the excellent desserts; profiteroles with mint ice cream and "nappage" chocolate sauce scores high on presentation and taste.
