Basix Cafe Description:
Good food, friendly service and a pleasant, casual atmosphere make this lovely West Hollywood bistro a neighborhood favorite. The food is consistently good here---standouts include the Tuscan tomato bread soup, a substantial appetizer that still manages to taste light and fresh. Lunch consists of a standard selection of salads, sandwiches and burgers---all are good, though traditional Neopolitan pizzas (thin crust) are above-average choices. Dinner choices include a selection of pasta dishes; cream sauces here can be a bit on the dull side, so stick to the house-made marinara, which is delightful. Entrées like London sirloin, served with honey chipotle sauce and mashed red potatoes, are almost surprisingly well managed for such an unpretentious venue---a roast loin of pork, moist and cooked just so, is thoughtfully presented with a light rosemary sauce and cheerfully tart fresh apple sautée. The attitude is no frills, just simple, good food. The wine list is the main area that could use some attention; prices are manageable (all selections are available by the glass) but it seems that a certain amount of quality has been compromised to make it so.
