Tosca Description:
This Mediterranean eatery has all of the elements of a big-city success story, but it unfolds instead just off Hingham Harbor. The dramatic space, a bit edgy with exposed bricks and pipes, soars; yet its very size allows you to enjoy anonymous intimacy with your dining companion---even as you enjoy Kevin Long's seasonal cuisine. Long's youth belies his talent. His menu, however, does not, showing in such clever takes on classics as liver and onions: glazed chicken livers with cipollini, apple-smoked bacon and golden-raisin marmellata is nearly as rich and sweet as dessert. You'll also find true originals---battered, fried shrimp with preserved lemon and caperberry-tartar sauce, for instance, or a striking salad of raw grated heirloom pumpkin with warm ricotta salata and pumpkinseed oil. The wine list---which divides most of its attention between California and Italy---is not exactly a bargain lover's dream, which might be why the crowd tends to skew older. But the total Tosca experience is worth the few extra bucks as well as the commute.
