Miyo's Description:
It looks like you're driving into an apartment complex, but in the midst of it is Miyo's, a popular Japanese restaurant. It's on the second floor - just go up the stairs. If you're lucky, you'll be able to look out at the lagoon below as you dine.
This is one of Hilo's greatest culinary secrets. The small, unpretentious, authentic Japanese restaurant on the second floor of a condominium development building is packed with locals, but remains off the beaten track for most tourists. Make sure to get a window table overlooking Hilo's beautiful Waiakea pond. The rustic, rough-cut wood interior with high ceilings and open kitchen offers a flavorful setting for unpretentious and tasty Japanese cooking. The tempura is crispy and the fish is fresh and varied. We love the sashimi here, straight from the ocean, as well as the miso soup that comes with the broad choice of entrées. There are also plenty of vegetarian selections. Taking the little effort in making yourself understood to your waitress, who may speak limited English, just adds to the Japanese-subdued atmosphere. You are welcome to bring in your own wine or beer.
