Mayor Mike's Restaurant Description:
When Mike Peters wants to chat and shake hands these days, he's not looking for your vote. Retired from public office, the four-term mayor is once again serving Hartford, only this time around, he's mostly concerned with what his constituents think of Mayor Mike's Blonde Ale and The Mayor's Mussels. We were happy to tell the mayor, who greets diners most evenings, that his namesake microbrew, made locally by Olde Burnside Brewing, is light but flavorful and that the mussels, bathed in a sauce of shallots, green onions, tomatoes and roasted garlic, are outstanding. It's hard not to like Mike's. The atmosphere is convivial and relaxing, its interior combining a booth-filled dining room of warm blacks and browns and a cozy bar that's something of a neighborhood hangout. Many sandwiches are served on thick, garlicky Texas Toast with the city's best fries on the side; not surprisingly, the kitchen also excels at that other barroom staple, the hamburger. The Firehouse pot roast is surprisingly tender and elegantly presented; the meatloaf comes in slabs. Buffalo wings are the only disappointment; we expect them to be alarmingly spicy given the mayor's pre-political occupation as a firefighter. They aren't. Still, with a platform of hearty portions and reasonable prices, it looks as though the mayor has another victory to celebrate.
