Ichiban Japanese & Korean Restaurant Description:
Offering a range of favorite entrees and appetizers from each culture, the restaurant was originally in downtown Hartford, but moved several years ago to Hartford's west end neighborhood, which is slowly redeveloping as a restaurant district.
We're moving on up, to the West side, to a deluxe....Well, you know the rest. And like the Jeffersons, the owners of Ichiban relocated to bigger digs to showcase their delicious and diverting menu of Korean and Japanese dishes. If downtown Hartford wasn't a good fit for Ichiban, the restaurant-hungry West-enders are game for very good sushi, udon noodles, miso soup, dumplings, tempura and hot-pot dinners. Start with sushi (salmon skin maki, eel and avocado maki) or sashimi (tuna, yellowtail, salmon). Perhaps you're more in the mood for pan-fried gyoza (dumplings) or the cloudy, bracing steam of miso soup. Ichiban's Korean heart lies in the hot-pot dinners---generous cauldrons of soup filled with vegetables, seafood, tofu, pork and spicy kimchi (fermented cabbage). The best is the kimchi geegae, a tongue-searing concoction of pickled cabbage and pork. We also like the nabeyaki udon, a filling Japanese noodle soup loaded with chicken, egg and tempura vegetables. If you like the firepower of Korean food, be sure to tell the waiter you want hot and spicy. Ichiban will be happy to comply.
