Modern art meets haute cuisine at Hot Tomato's, a restaurant that offers upscale northern Italian fare with a contemporary twist. The atmosphere's lively, the wine list is about an arm and a half long, and the food's generally first-rate. Folks have been known to come from miles away just to get a taste of the "world-famous" garlic bread. But their first taste is of pure vibe: an open kitchen and vibrant pop art murals lend warmth and whimsy to the long, narrow, bi-level dining room, where nary a table lacks a basket of the aforementioned garlic bread, smothered with four cheeses. While the menu includes chophouse classics like New York strip and grilled North Atlantic salmon, we're partial to the pastas---especially the three-devil shrimp, a sausage and seafood feast atop linguine with a red sauce that is not falsely advertised as "fiery." For the fainter of taste bud, lobster pinchiori---lobster, portobello and asparagus in a lobster cream sauce over tagliatelle---is a richly satisfying alternative. And the melanzana---breaded eggplant over baked ziti with ricotta cheese, marinara and a basil pesto---is delicious too. Much as we love to linger, workaholics can call ahead to ensure lunch is already on the table when they arrive.
