ABIS Description:
The hibachi tradition, with chefs taking center stage while they slice, sizzle and dice for the hungry crowds, isn't the latest thing anymore; in fact, it can seem a bit kitschy. So, you'll be glad to know that there are no theatrics at Abis; it's just a close-to-authentic eatery in the classic Japanese tradition. Dinner appetizers may include sashimi and negima-yaki (cooked scallions rolled with sliced beef) while entrées may range from assorted sushi and chicken teriyaki to jumbo shrimp and vegetables. There are Westernized elements here, such as in the too-typical Asian décor---even extending to the four tables on a raised, stage-like platform where diners sit in the traditional manner, supposedly with their feet crossed under the table, but actually dangling in a hidden pit. However, the food is quite good and the atmosphere low-key, yet bustling and friendly.
