Mezze Description:
Owner Jason Bitar's mother, Liza, had a restaurant in Beirut and today she still does all the cooking at the family's Lebanese bistro. This isn't a vegetarian restaurant, per se, but there are many vegetarian mezze, many of which are vegan. The stuffed grape leaves are among the best anywhere, and crisp, aromatic cilantro-garlic fries get as close to thrilling as a fried potato could. Shwarma, a dish of tender, marinated beef sliced and topped with tahini, is paired with a crisp green salad. Finish with a Lebanese classic sweet cheese in rose water syrup with a dusting of crushed pistachios, an acquired taste, perhaps, but nonetheless interesting. Any of several house-made ice creams, such as the mocha with caramelized hazelnuts, will do nicely as well, followed by small cups of that wicked Arab coffee made fragrant with cardamom seeds. Mezza's wine list isn't extensive, but the focus on Lebanese wines makes it special. Château Kefraya, for instance, is available only at this restaurant. The excellent rosé goes with nearly everything on the menu.
