Burma Road Description:
Although very much a lesser-known Southeast Asian cuisine, Burmese meals are slowly making an impression on foodies in the DC suburbs, especially with the opening of this ambitious white tablecloth restaurant. While the dishes may lack all the garnishes and flavor intensity of a traditional meal, what you get is certainly satisfying. Note that the menu has both Chinese and Burmese offerings, since both cultures live and cook in that country. But for those to whom anything Chinese is overly familiar, it's a good time to step lively into a different kind of meal plan: among the salads, good choices are the ginger, pickled tea leaf, and spicy noodle options. The last, though it's starred for heat, is really rather bland. You'll find plenty of entrée offerings, from a rather meager pantay noodle dish (egg noodles supposedly tossed with beef and veggies; veggies were absent) to a fulsome pork spiced with pickled mango. Many other options should give you a bird's eye food sampling of this very remote country.
