Oakwood Cafe Description:
Beginning at his family's Dalton, Georgia, restaurant, the Oakwood Café, Kasey Carpenter has brought his family's concept to the State Farmers Market, replacing the Thomas Marketplace Restaurant. Family and employees' recipes yield such mainstays as pot roast and chicken salad. Classic cornmeal-crusted fried green tomatoes are in high demand, and are offered daily. Most vegetables are fresh; with the State Farmers Market at the back door, why not? From the restaurant's smokers come hams, turkeys, ribs and chicken. The winner, we think, is the tender, juicy smoked pork loin. Smoked chicken is another favorite. The barbecue comes with the sauce already mixed in. Waitresses address patrons in what may seem to be familiar terms, such as "Honey" and "Sugar," but the form is to make people feel welcome. Tourists zooming through Georgia on I-75 should make a point of stopping for a real feast.
