For visitors to the artsy Gulfport community, here's a welcome respite after viewing art galleries and boutiques along Beach Boulevard. Located in the heart of this small art village, Backfin Blue Café fills several rooms of an old wooden house. Its dining areas and deck provide a homey atmosphere complemented by fairly traditional, and limited, menu selections. Appetizers include a portobello mushroom with Gorgonzola stuffing, served in a bordelaise sauce. Spinach and mushroom salad with ginger vinaigrette and basil-stuffed, bacon-wrapped barbecue shrimp are standouts. An entrée that appeals to vegetarians is the five cheese lasagna: portobello mushroom, spinach and a variety of vegetables and romano, Fontina, mozzarella, provolone and Parmesan. The restaurant specializes in seafood but also offers prime rib and a generous serving of homemade meatloaf with a side of garlic mashed potatoes.
