St George & the Dragon Description:
Naples has a couple dense concentrations of wonderful restaurants, the greatest embarrassment of riches assembled on Fifth. The gamut is impressive, from trendy to fancy "Continental," covering a range of prices and ethnicities. The granddaddy of them all, though, is St. George, which has been doing what it does best since 1969, with moody lighting, a reason to get dressed up, and nostalgic Continental fare like fat escargots redolent of garlic and dripping butter, or creamy Delmonico potatoes. The interior is among the main attractions, with rich wood paneling, beamed ceilings and plush red leather banquettes and cushy chairs. We're not sure what all this has to do with the story of Saint George, a soldier in the Roman Empire, who purportedly slew a dragon with a well-placed lance, but we won't ask too many questions in order to peacefully enjoy the rosy prime rib or Icelandic herring in cream.
