Firefly Grill & Wine Bar Description:
This cozy North County restaurant serves upscale comfort food with good value wine. Owner Jim Barrasso, a longtime Morton's executive, has paired his food service expertise with the cooking of chef Aaron Daily, formerly of the Hotel Del's Prince of Wales. The feel-good, creative menu includes dishes like a tapas trio (andouille sausage, marinated Spanish olives and bacon-wrapped dates), and filet mignon bites served on a bed of mashed potatoes and topped with a strip of melted Brie. Entrées like grilled New Zealand rack of lamb with garlic-mustard crust appeal to carnivores, though a nod to vegetarians appears with a tasty squash roulade filled with hummus atop warm artichokes, roasted mushrooms and couscous. Wine lovers will appreciate the 30 selections by the glass and global list. Happy hours feature wine flights and nibbles like grilled flatbread with sun-dried tomato tapanade, kalamata olive tapenade and fried goat cheese. Desserts are a highlight, especially the maple-mascarpone cheesecake with dried fruit and nut compote. Lucky in-season guests will find the tender Carlsbad strawberry shortcake with balsamic reduction on the menu.

Review :
We had reservations for a party of 4 during restaurant week. Even though our reservation was made well in advance, and confirmed ahead of time, we still waited 20 minutes before being seated.
3 out of 4 people in our party ordered the "grilled black angus new york strip steak in a port wine reduction", which we all ordered MEDIUM RARE. One person received a medium rare steak, one person received a medium-well steak, and I received a medium steak with a 1/4 inch layer of charcoal covering the top. None of the other people received a steak with a layer of charcoal on the steak.
When the server returned to check on us, and asked if the steak was cooked correctly, I politely and apologetically told her that my steak was burnt (And we're talking this tasted like kingsford charcoal it was so badly burnt). She took it back to have the chef cook a new steak, and what I received back was even worse than the first one!
It was extremely WELL DONE, dry, and tough as shoe leather. I ate one bite and almost choked because it was so incredibly disgusting and inedible. I can't believe how poor the chef's standards are that he would serve a steak to any customer in that condition! This was truly the WORST steak I have ever had at a restaurant in my entire life. I was equally shocked, that even though I didn't eat any my steak - I only ate the carrots and potatoes - the manager and server didn't try to make things right.
I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone, ever. Please don't waste your money. And all of this was during restaurant week - when they are TRYING to ATTRACT business, so their standards should be the highest.
