Originally built by the Pullman Company in 1917
as a diner known as the Decota, the rail car was later purchased by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1947 and completely refurbished, including an all stainless steel kitchen, which remains in tact today. The rail car was renamed the Palm Grove Cafe and assigned to the City of New Orleans until it’s retirement many years later. The City of New Orleans trains were famous for catering to the Chicago Mafia, who were wined and dined on the frequent gambling trips to and from New Orleans. These trains also inspired the well-known song “City of New Orleans? composed by Woody Guthrie.
In the mid 1990’s the rail car was purchased by Mr. James Sistare of Jacksonville, Florida and
completely refurbished as you see it today. The car was renamed the Jacksonville and served as a private party car stationed at a depot in the City of Jacksonville. In 2001 the car was purchased by Revelle’s River Resort and relocated to Revelle’s Bowden Station on the former site of the Western Maryland spur line used to make up coal and timber freight trains for over 70 years. Mr. Chevalier Revelle was station master at the Bowden Station during much of this period. Today this famous dining car continues to serve passengers as it has for over 90 years. It has been renamed the Shaver’s Fork in honor of it’s new home on the banks of the Shaver’s Fork of the Cheat River.
