Upscale, casual restaurant in downtown Durham featuring using fresh, seasonal and, when available, locally sourced foods prepared in a rustic Italian and French style.
Piedmont's owners, Andy Magowan and Drew Brown, spent a year in Italy's Piedmont region picking the Nebbiolo grapes that compose its world-renowned Barolo red wine, and dreaming of opening their own restaurant back home. Now a reality, this downtown Durham bistro features fresh local farm produce as the basis for a daily changing menu of rustic Northern Italian dishes: duck breast with sweet potato purée, braised kale and cranberry jus; pork belly with braised red cabbage and mustard glaze; risotto with apples, hazelnuts and local goat cheese; and garlic sausage with white bean ragoût and collard greens. Desserts, all made in-house, usually include a fresh fruit crostata, silky panna cotta, and fresh sorbets featuring fruits of the season. The wine list showcases unusual selections from small Italian vineyards, and as you might expect, offers some lovely Barolos.
