Smith & Wollensky Description:
The visitor had best be in the mood for thick slabs of meat and fine wines. Large enough to accommodate the occasional junket groups of executives or lobbyists, Smith & Wollensky is divided into cozier dining areas, suitable for discussions of business or politics over cigars and brandy. But in addition to the polished wood and brass, fin-de-sieclé decor of the steakhouse, the restaurant does sponsor a more casual Wollensky's Grill area (featuring the bar and a simpler menu), as well as outdoor café tables lining Farragut's busy sidewalks
One of the first of the big-name steakhouses to move to DC in the nineties, Smith & Wollensky offers a picturesque sidewalk seating area plus assorted indoor dining rooms to suit almost any occasion. If the weather's warm and dry, snag an alfresco table and get ready to enjoy a big meal, lunch or dinner. Midday, you'll be treated to a sizeable selection, including the house hamburgers made from their own aged beef. They come with a side of hot, crispy, hand-cut fries that are irresistible. You can start off with the split pea soup or fried calamari, but you should consider their version of the classic iceberg wedge salad topped with thick slices of ripe tomatoes and bathed in a Roquefort dressing. You'll spoil any chance for dessert---from New York cheesecake to a selection of crème brûlées, all served from the pastry cart---if you consume all the skillet-baked and buttery biscuit-bread. In the evenings, chances are you'll turn to one of the restaurant's many steak offerings, but you can also select some non-beef options, such as lamb chops and roast chicken.
