La Chaumiere Description:
Crowded-- or cozy, depending on your point of view-- La Chaumiere is distinctively French provincial in decor from the central stone fireplace to the white walls and dark wood. Prices are moderate and the service relaxed. Founded in the mid-1970s, it has become an institution, a spot where Georgetown's old guard meets its newest inductees.
The country-inn atmosphere and the reliable cooking at this Georgetown institution have made it a favorite neighborhood gathering spot for more than three decades. Lunchtime is especially busy. The menu consists of basic bistro fare---dishes like onion soup, mussels in garlic butter and sole meunière. Specialties include tripes à la mode de Caën and quenelles de brochette Lyonnaise, but you can also get more up-to-date dishes such as duck foie gras with cassis sauce. Check with your server for the daily specials, which have included crab-filled crêpes, couscous and cassoulet.
