Hitching Post Description:
Perhaps the most idiosyncratic restaurant in the entire metro area is this quirky mom-and-pop place in the Petworth neighborhood. Just down the street from St. Paul's center and church, The Hitching Post serves drop-dead first-rate soul food, but there's a minor hitch: each meal is cooked to order, and that means you wait and wait. Yes, do come hungry, but you might want to bring along a snack or two. And chill out by listening to the jukebox favorites. You'll be glad you stayed, however. The portions are beyond generous, and such dishes as the fried chicken and the fried oysters will knock you over. And the sides, such as the mac 'n' cheese, are standouts. The cook might prepare the latter with shells---all the better to capture the cheese and sauce---and must use heavy cream and pounds of grated cheddar to give the dish its killer calories. The establishment seats maybe 20 people, plus outdoors tables.
