Florida Avenue Grill Description:
The busiest hours at this Washington old-timer mean a patient wait for one of the few booths or bar stool seats. Although good Southern food has been served here since 1944, breakfasts may be the most popular meal. Fortunately for late-risers, breakfast is served until 1 p.m. Heady aromas of sausage and scrapple, country ham and bacon, eggs and home fries, pancakes and maple syrup can weaken a dieter's will. Everything here is made from scratch---if the cooking seems a bit slow, it's just that the crowds never thin out. Lunch items include hefty sandwiches such as Cajun catfish or pork chops, and dinners are homey meals starring baked turkey, sautéed chicken livers over rice and short ribs with collard greens and candied sweet potatoes. Save room for dessert: bread pudding, peach cobbler or banana pudding. And, best of all, eating here is a budgeter's dream.
