Burma Restaurant Description:
Up a flight of stairs in a weathered Chinatown building, Burma Restaurant is a rarity. When the nearby Verizon Center is open, both tourists and conventioneers flock here, and the once-quiet restaurant is abuzz with patrons crowding in to sample one of Asia's least-known cuisines. For authentic flavors, start with gold fingers---batter-dipped and deep-fried pieces of squash. For a main course, try ohno kauswe, a coconut milk-based sauce poured over egg noodles, or mohingar, the Burmese breakfast of fish soup. (Both are virtually the national dishes.) Add to this the typical Burmese snack: green tea leaf salad with garlic, sesame seeds and dried shrimp. Not every flavor or dish hits the mark, but you'll find enough from this exotic country to celebrate the no-frills restaurant's economical cuisine.
