Back at the turn of the last century when a buck really went far, lumber baron David Whitney ordered construction of a sweeping Romanesque-style mansion on one of Detroit's main thoroughfares. The 21,000-square-foot, pink granite house with its 52 rooms, ten bathrooms, grand staircase and 20 fireplaces cost $400,000 to construct. Today, this showstopper is one of the city's most elegant dining venues. There are four main dining rooms on the first floor, including one decorated mainly in pink. The elaborate entrées also tend to reflect a more opulent time, and we're apt to come and come again for the roasted swordfish, grilled baby lamb chops, filet mignon and Traverse City cherry pork tenderloin. On weekends, cap off dinner with dessert on the third floor, where jazz and blues artists entertain.
